The Hellenic Mediterranean University (HMU) is based in Crete, Greece established in 2019 from the Technological Educational Institute of Crete, spans 5 schools with a focus on research and education in technology, science, engineering and management. The Electrical and Computer Engineering Department which is involved in the TRIFFID project covers the fields of Telecommunications, Energy, Automatic Control, Electronics, and Computers. With a strong emphasis on combining theoretical knowledge with practical applications, the department is dedicated to preparing future engineers to address complex, real-world challenges. In collaboration with the TRIFFID Project, the PASIPHAE Group within the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department is actively advancing their shared vision and goals.

PASIPHAE Group leader in communication technologies since 2001 with more than 12+ EU-Funded Projects currently active and over 50 Students in PhD, MSc, & Beng and Collaboration with over 100 Companies in Industrial Sector including HP, IBM, GOOGLE, Intracom, Thomson, Philips, Idemia, etc.  Since its founding Pasiphae Group has participated in numerous projects funded by the European Union's Framework Programmes 5, 6, 7, and Horizon 2020, with a focus on information and communication technology (ICT), health, and safety.

Organisation’s role in TRIFFID

The Hellenic Mediterranean University (HMU) holds two roles in the TRIFFID project: acting as the technical partner and leading communication and dissemination activities.

As the technical partner, HMU drives the development of a communication framework (T3.4) that interconnects the various components within the TRIFFID ecosystem. This involves designing, implementing, and maintaining a robust and efficient infrastructure to ensure reliable communication among all components of the TRIFFID. To achieve this, HMU will provide the necessary hardware and software required to establish and maintain reliable communication within the TRIFFID ecosystem.

In addition to its technical role, HMU leads the project’s communication and dissemination efforts (WP7). This includes creating and executing a strategic plan to raise awareness, engage stakeholders, and showcase the project’s innovative solutions.

Harokopio University of Athens (HUA) is a public university dedicated to promoting research and learning in a small, well focused set of intellectual areas. The university, situated in the centre of Athens and close to the Unesco World Heritage Centre of the Acropolis, originates from an educational institution that was first established in 1929 and gained the status of University in 1990. It takes its name from the national benefactor Panagis Harokopos. The University’s excellent campus facilities house four academic departments. The design and overall development of the University has been based on international standards and on scientific research.

The department involved in TRIFFID is the Department of Informatics and Telematics. It was founded in 2006 with a mission to advance Computer Science, primarily in the field of web/telematic applications, big data, machine learning and networking. The Department places strong emphasis on application domains such as internet technologies, digital transformation, e-business, e-government, e-health, advanced transport telematics,  etc.

Short Description

The Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya - BarcelonaTech (UPC) is a public institution of research and higher education in the fields of engineering, architecture, sciences and technology, and one of the leading technical universities in Europe. Every year, close to 6,000 bachelor’s and master’s students, more than 300 doctoral students and 1,600 continuing education students graduate. The UPC has a high graduate employment rate: 95% of its graduates are in work and 88% find a job in under three months.

The UPC researchers participating in TRIFFID belong to the Automatic Control department and are associate researchers of the Institut de Robòtica i Informàtica Industrial (IRI). IRI is a Joint University Research Institute of the Spanish Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) and the UPC. The Institute conducts basic and applied research in robotics and automatic control. It was created in November 1995 and is located in the Parc Tecnològic de Barcelona, in the Faculty of Mathematics and Statistics building in the South Campus of UPC in Barcelona, Spain. In particular, within IRI, the TRIFFID team is part of the Mobile Robotics research line, whose research activities are aimed to endow mobile robots and ubiquitous computing devices the necessary skills to aid humans in everyday life activities. These skills range from pure perceptual activities such as tracking, recognition or situation awareness, to motion skills, such as localization, mapping, autonomous navigation, path planning or exploration. UPC’s team CV includes faculty, undergraduate, MSc, PhD, and postdoc members, along with technical support personnel involved in other R&D projects.

Organisation’s role in TRIFFID

UPC will serve as technical manager of TRIFFID (T1.2), monitoring the project’s technical developments, while implementing quality control procedures and project activity planning. Further, UPC is the leader of WP3 - Robot navigation and communications. UPC is in charge of T3.1 - Dynamic robot task/mission planning; T3.2 - Autonomous UGV and UAV navigation; and T3.3 - Safety monitoring and fault recovery. Alongside with the leading activities, UPC also participates in T2.2 - Pilot scenario definition; T2.5 - System acceptance and evaluation; T4.1 - Visual scene analysis and EO data analysis; T4.2 - Non-visual data analysis and information fusion; and T6.1 - System specifications and design. The technical contributions will be focused in LiDAR SLAM and multimodal sensor fusion techniques, with special interest in semantic mapping, robot localization, state estimation, planning and navigation and, overall, the perception and control of the robotic platforms.

Organisation’s role in TRIFFID

The ACROSS team from UWB will provide a robotic dog (UGV) and a UAV platform for the project, equipping them with the necessary sensors and data bridges to meet the requirements of all use cases defined by project partners. The team is involved in several work packages, including WP2 (Use-case Requirements and Pilot Studies), specifically T2.2 (Pilot Scenario Definition), and WP6 (TRIFFID System Specification, Integration, and Validation), where ACROSS leads T6.2 (Robot, Sensor, and Communication Integration) and contributes to T6.1 (System Specifications and Design) and T6.5 (TRIFFID System Validation and Evaluation). Additionally, ACROSS is engaged in WP1, WP5, and WP7 to support broader project objectives.

The National Research Council of Italy (https://www.cnr.it) is the largest national public research organization distributed in a network of 88 institutes. CNR is contributing with the Planning and Scheduling Technology (PST) Laboratory at the Institute for Cognitive Science and Technology (ISTC), a leading institute for cognitive science, cognitive technology and artificial intelligence (https://www.istc.cnr.it).

The PST lab (https://www.istc.cnr.it/en/group/pst) was founded in 1997 as a research group  focused on automated and interactive techniques for planning problems. It has obtained results on specialized constraint reasoning, (meta) heuristics for scheduling, mixed-initiative problem solving, timeline-based planning.  The group has been involved for over twenty years in a collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA).  Three problem solving tools developed by PST are in continuous daily use in the mission planning ground facility at ESA-ESOC, Darmstadt.  More recently, the lab broadened its research interests toward new areas thus acquiring competences in robotics, ambient assisted living, cognitive systems for training, manufacturing and health systems for aging well. The lab has a long experience in EU-funded research projects in different  topics (Space, ICT, Security, Manufacturing and AAL). The lab is involved in the coordination of the euRobotics Topic Group on A.I. and Cognition in Robotics.

Organisation’s role in TRIFFID

CNR will mainly contribute to: the analysis of the societal impact of the technological solutions generated by the project, promote a human-centered design approach also considering human factors, the study of the issues related to Human-Robot Interaction in crisis management, the development of AI-based solutions to foster autonomy in UAV and UGV support to first responders and the exploitation/dissemination of the results of the project.

The Disaster Competence Network Austria (DCNA) is an essential component of research into crises and disasters and their prevention and management in Austria and beyond. The efficient coordination of excellent, contemporary, and internationally competitive activities in security and disaster research is crucial. DCNA’s activities focus on continuous and permanent networking, knowledge and technology transfer, as well as cooperation to facilitate access to expertise, models, tools, and research approaches.

Organisation’s role in TRIFFID

DCNA provides support primarily in evaluating and integrating the system into the processes of emergency organisations as leader of work package 5. DCNA also provides support in the areas of dissemination and use-case requirements (work package 7). Toward the end of the project, DCNA will create a training curriculum and help organise exercises in which the application of the TRIFFID system is practiced in the field.

authored a book on next-generation networks and network convergence and has published numerous
papers in conferences and scientific journals. His research interests lie in wireless networks and the IoT,

Organisation’s role in TRIFFID

TEL participates in TRIFFID project as a technical partner responsible for the system specifications and
design, the middleware development for software integration, front-end HCI development, component
integration and final technical system validation. TEL also collaborates with other TRIFFID partners in the
definition of the user requirements and the scenarios for the pilot studies, the planning of the pilot
execution and the evaluation and acceptance of the system by the end users. TEL also contributes to the
creation of the operational integration standards, protocols and policy recommendations and the
training curricula and exercises for First Responders.

Pompiers de l’Urgence Internationale (PUI), International Emergency Firefighter, is a French NGO founded in 2004, based in Limoges, with 265 volunteers. Our mission is to provide aid to populations affected by crises, strengthen civil security in emerging countries, and promote disaster prevention. As first responders, PUI plays a pivotal role in the TRIFFID project, specifically contributing to the Use-Case #1: Wildfire at the Wildland–Industrial Area Interface. Our tasks include defining scenario definition, pilot evaluation, and leading the planning of all pilots.
Our primary objectives are to simulate and test innovative technologies in real-world scenarios, focusing on early wildfire detection, improved response coordination, and victim rescue. By immersing ourselves in diverse situations, we aim to provide actionable insights into the practicality and effectiveness of these technologies, ensuring their relevance for operational use. Through this involvement, PUI strengthens its commitment to advancing global disaster preparedness and response capabilities.
